Architecture at Kilburn Mansion is guided by care rather than assertion. The restoration reveals the original façade and proportions, while new interventions are composed with restraint—recessive, deliberate and precise. Old and new exist in balance, allowing light, material and rhythm to shape a building that feels settled in its place, quietly enduring within East Melbourne’s historic streetscape.

Every Detail Ages Gracefully

The new building withdraws—monolithic, finely textured—so the heritage façades can speak. Horizontal incisions bring light into the lobby; chamfered stone edges catch shadow and echo the carved reliefs nearby. Distinct volumes separate old and new with slender shadow-lines, allowing each to remain legible.

Uncovering heritage

Over the years, Kilburn Mansion became flanked by newer annexes that hid its original prominence. It was imperative to uncover the building and re-establish its presence. By placing a high-performing contemporary building behind it, we create a balance of modern lifestyle within a grounded, rare heritage setting.
